Martin Schulz is the chair of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation since the end of 2020. Before, he served as the president of the European Parliament and was re-elected once. During his time as the president, he received the Charlemagne Prize for his work on strengthening the parliament and democratic legitimacy in the European Union. Schulz has been a member of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) since 1974 and became federal chair in 2017. In this year, he also became candidate for Chancellor in the Federal election. His focus at the Friedrich Ebert Foundation are equal opportunities, political education and international cooperation to facilitate the success of democracy.
