About the Session

The Ukraine war has exposed the European dependency on Russian gas and European leaders are scrambling to find new energy sources fast. Political stakes are high, because the cost of living crisis accompanying the energy shortage is leading to social unrest in many European countries. As new energy partnerships are quickly set up, natural gas imports are often seen as a fast and reliable solution to the immediate energy needs. But this raises questions regarding the geopolitical as well as climate consequences of building new gas infrastructure compared focusing on fast-tracking renewable energy capacities. The session will explore how to solve the immediate energy crisis in an equitable manner while staying on track with climate goals.
